New Class! User Experience: Mobile First

Spring quarter we will be offering a new class UX: Mobile First taught by instructor Jeffrey Wright. Here is an interview we held with him that helps further describe his background in the field, the class and what you will be learning:

1. How long have you been in the UX field and what have been your favorite projects you have worked on?

I’ve been working exclusively as a UX specialist for the last 5 years and in the web design field at large for over 10 years. Some of my favorite projects include leading a responsive UX redesign for Youtoo Technologies “Social Media to TV” platform; a universal iOS app for DirecTV; and the redesign of a POS system for FGL Sports in Canada.

2. Tell us about the UX Mobile class you will be teaching and some of the highlights of the class:

The Mobile First class will introduce the concept of device centric design, covering cultural anthropology, app design, screen dimensions, input device preferences, and much more. The course goal is to develop UX design proficiency for mobile experiences, applying design thinking and user experience strategies. By course completion, participants should be competent in applying mobile design patterns to known user interface challenges.

By the end of the course, students will have created their own mobile app design, learned a wide range of common mobile user interface patterns (and know when to apply them), and understand the practical application and use of mobile user experience strategies.

Additionally, students will gain exposure to the business of conducting user experience design, with real-world examples of mobile UX deliverables, brief introductions to a wide range of wireframing, prototyping and usability testing tools, and much more.

3. What are the most valuable ideas/concepts you think students will take away from this UX Mobile class?

Some of the most valuable concepts students will take away are the fundamentals of Responsive Web Design (RWD), understanding and navigating the  politics of “Mobile First” design amongst cross-disciplinary teams, the importance of user research and testing to validate their designs, and the role UX plays in wearables and the Internet of Things.
